Appropriation

Appropriation is an interactive pdf that examines the world of appropriation within art. Appropriation uses three politically charged pieces of work that were chosen from different artists. Three powerful and influential women artists; Hannah Hoch, Deborah Kass, and Julia Wachtel, were chosen to represent three different decades of appropriation (1920,1990, 2010). Representation of women; and other minority groups, in graphic design and printmaking is rare and often underrepresented and exploited.

Hannah Hoch, Heads of State (1920)

Hannah Hoch’s Heads of State uses appropriated imagery and textures to address political, and gender issues in Germany during the 1920s.

Deborah Kass Third World, First World (1990)

Deborah Kass' Third World, First World appropriates pop culture, art history, and geography to address problematic uses of primitivism and racism in society, and art.

Julia Wachtel, The Spirit (2010)

Julia Wachtel's The Spirit addresses political and social ideas on maternity and womanhood through the uses of appropriated imagery of art objects and governmental figures.
